What is Day 1 CPT?
Day 1 CPT refers to F-1 graduate programs that authorize Curricular Practical Training (CPT) from a student's very first term, rather than the usual one-academic-year wait — a real, if narrow, regulatory exception that also draws significant scrutiny from immigration officers.
Day 1 CPT: Complete Guide
How Day 1 CPT works in graduate programs that require practical training from the start, what SEVP's August 2026 guidance says, and what to check first.
Second Master's Degree in the USA
Pursuing a second master's degree on F-1 status is possible, but SEVP treats a program at the same degree level as your prior one differently from advancing to a new level — the details depend on your specific academic history.
Pursuing a PhD After a Master's Degree
Advancing from a master's to a PhD is treated by SEVP as moving to a higher education level, generally more straightforward than a same-level second master's — but it still requires careful SEVIS handling, especially if you're changing schools.
H-1B to F-1 Change of Status
Students whose H-1B employment ends (e.g. layoff) sometimes change status to F-1 to remain in the US lawfully while pursuing further study — this requires filing Form I-539 while still in status or within the standard 60-day grace period.
H-4 to F-1 Change of Status
H-4 dependents (spouses and children of H-1B holders) can generally already study full-time without changing status — H-4 to F-1 becomes relevant mainly for CPT/OPT work authorization, or when a dependent child turns 21 and "ages out" of H-4 eligibility.
CPT vs. OPT vs. STEM OPT
CPT, OPT, and the STEM OPT extension are three distinct forms of F-1 work authorization, tied to different points in — or after — your academic program.
Change of Status to F-1
Changing to F-1 status from within the US (e.g. from H-1B, H-4, B-1/B-2, or another nonimmigrant category) is done via USCIS Form I-539, and has a firm rule: you generally can't apply until 30 days after your most recent US entry.
Maintaining F-1 Status
The core requirement of F-1 status is a full course of study every fall and spring term — dropping below full-time without your DSO's prior approval, or working without authorization, are the two most common status violations.
SEVIS Transfer Guide
A SEVIS transfer moves your official student record — and F-1 status — from one SEVP-certified school to another without leaving the US. Your SEVIS ID stays the same throughout.
